The Choice is Yours!

Local Elections? Barack Obama? The Apprentice final? They all pale into insignificance as voting begins to discover the identity of the next Wigan Athletic Junior Club mascot!

As a part of Spring Design & Advertising’s work on the ongoing rebrand of the Club’s Junior operation, and after months of discussions, presentations and arguments about our favourites(!), The Latics have narrowed the field to two final candidates. Now either a Stripe covered Laticat or a nutty Squirrel will lead their young fans into 2009/10 and beyond.

At Spring we’re pledging our support to the Laticat, but whoever proves to be your favourite make sure you log on to cast your vote at http://www.wiganlatics.co.uk/page/ClubNews/0,,10429~1693930,00.html

We’ll look forward to working with the winner when he takes his throne!

Thought for the week: Too maverick, or not too maverick?

Friday, 20 February 2009

This week gave us both a chuckle and some food for thought when we received the news that one of our clients had narrowly missed out on a new contract as the contractor had the unusual concern that they may be, and I quote, "Too maverick".

The chuckle came first as, knowing the company in question as we do, the perception was more than a little misplaced. But the story got us thinking - just how maverick is "too maverick"? And what exactly does it mean in the first place? After recalling screen depictions of feisty fighter pilots and conniving card sharks, we decided to refer to the good old Oxford English:

"A person who thinks and behaves independently, esp. one who refuses to adhere to the orthodoxy of the group to which he or she belongs."

To us the definition epitomised the contradictory nature of the argument. Think and behave independently? We'd suggest that's essential. Refuse to adhere to the group? Maybe that's where the potential problem lies. One should certainly appreciate the need to support a decision-maker, even when a chosen course of action may not be your suggested way forward. But by the same token, as a decision maker you must be responsive to team members who voice their ideas and opinions. After all, if you don't push the boundaries you will never know where they lie.

So where would you place yourself on the Maverick-Goose scale? This may not be the last time we refer to that new method of character evaluation.¬

So, here is the news!
